Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant wants the Russian ambassador to appear before the House of Comons Defence Committee, and she’s tabled a motion to force the government to invite him. The MP’s actions come on the heels of the governing Liberals declining to invite Alexander Darchiev voluntarily, as reported by the on-line journal iPolitics. The Defence Committee is looking into Russian aggession in the Black Sea region of Eastern Europe, and has heard from diplomats representing Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine about the effects of Russian beligerence on their countries. The hearings were prompted after the Russian Navy seized a Ukrainian ship and arrested its crew last week. The vessel was in recognized international waters near Crimea (cry-MEE-uh), a former Ukrainian province annexed by Russia in 2014. Gallant wants the Russian ambassador to attend the Defence Committee hearings and answer questions about the incident. The Defence Committee is considering additional sanctions against Russia, based on last week’s actions. The Russian diplomat has appeared before the committee on an earlier occasion, when Russian planes were intercepted in Canadian air space.
