Two children, aged 11 and nine, were found by police after a vehicle crashed into a cornfield in Laurentian Valley early Monday morning.
The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police says an officer on foot patrol in west-end Pembroke heard a vehicle doing burnouts at about 2:50 a.m. on Oct. 12.
Officers located the vehicle on Jean Avenue, but it accelerated away when police attempted a traffic stop. Police did not pursue it.
Shortly afterward, officers discovered the vehicle had left the road and crashed into a cornfield near the intersection of Jean Avenue and TV Tower Road.
The vehicle had been abandoned, prompting the OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team to search for the occupants. The two children were located about an hour later and sustained no serious injuries.
Police say the vehicle had been taken from a parent without their knowledge or consent. It was towed from the scene, and the children were turned over to their parents.
The OPP says no charges will be pursued because both children are below the age of criminal responsibility.
