Daina Proctor says she feels like she’s just getting started as Horton Township Mayor.
She’s asking for another term at the head of council.
In the last four years, Proctor has served as councillor and deputy mayor before becoming mayor and she’s learned a lot.
Proctor says based on her conversations with residents, she’s developed a list of seven key items she wants to work on.
Her first priority is to develop a township strategy to plan for services, investment and responsible growth.
Proctor says one of her strengths is her ability to advocate for the community, and in Horton’s case, they need someone to push for adequate funding from upper levels of government and a fair approach to downloaded costs from the province.
She says when they budget every winter, there are variables they know – like how many employees they have, how many kilometres of roads they have to maintain and how many vehicles they’ve got on the road.
What they lack is a predictable funding model.
Proctor says she would also like to see council adopt a committee of the whole model to prevent duplication, strengthen accountability, improve community engagement and save on staff time.
Proctor has only one challenger for the mayor’s chair – Nicholas Klinck.
