A series of meetings will be held soon on a proposed salmon farm for the Pontiac.
The meetings, to be held at the Campbell’s Bay Recreation Centre, will be held Tuesday (Aug 25) at 7pm and Wednesday (Aug 26) at 1:30pm. An evening meeting on the Wednesday is possible if there is a demand.
If approved, the aquaculture farm would be built on 5.6 hectares of land along the Ottawa River in Litchfield, west of Shawville.
The farm would be capable of producing an average of 2.8 million salmon per year for markets in Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern U.S. Currently, North America imports roughly 80 per cent of its salmon from places like Norway and Chile.
The company behind the venture, Samonix, says it will pull about 1,800 cubic metres of water per day out of the Ottawa River, but 99% of it will be recycled.
Quebec’s ministry of environment and Bureau of Public Hearings on the Environment have called for four months of public consultations on the project.
The meetings are also being live streamed, but anyone who wants to ask questions must register ahead of time.
Full details and case documents are on the Bureau D’audiences Publiques sur L’environnement (BAPE) website.
