Special Olympics Renfrew has some ambitious goals for their second annual Golf Tournament this Friday, June 26, at the Renfrew Golf Club.
Events organizer Kyle Duperron-Haynes says that they are not only looking to raise $20,000 to help fund year-round sport, recreation, and social opportunities for community members with intellectual disabilities but also to recruit more volunteers, coaches, and athletes and re-engage with other Special Olympics groups in the Ottawa Valley.
The event enjoyed an overwhelming amount of support during its debut last year, thanks to the many players and sponsors who brought in more than $10,000 for the cause. Title sponsors Chris and Tanya’s No Frills are among those who are back to continue supporting the cause, along with a few new names sweetening the pot for golfers on Friday afternoon.
Golfers can also get a hand with the help of three-time long drive champion Mike Zulauf, who will drive the ball on the longest par 5 for a donation, or they can try to hole out from 150 yards out to win a Muskoka Golf getaway package.
All of the excitement surrounding it is encouraging for Duperron-Haynes as Special Olympics Renfrew tries to develop long-term sustainability.
There are a few spaces left in the tournament as of this weekend. Sign up on the Renfrew Golf Club website.
