The Government of Canada is investing $2.2 billion to further modernize the Chalk River Laboratories, aiming to strengthen its position as a national centre for nuclear research, innovation and clean energy development.
Philip Kompass is the Director of Communications for CNL Chalk River and he says this most recent injection of capital courtesy of the Federal Government is intended to carry on the work that has been underway for many years.
The investment is expected to generate long-term employment growth in the region, attract highly skilled workers, and expand opportunities for local businesses supplying goods and services to the nuclear sector, including in nearby Petawawa.
Kompass speaks also of the need for constant upgrading of infrastructure that allows the plant to continue to thrive and he says that a big part of this new funding will allow for significant upgrades to many of the already world class resources in our own backyard.
Just over a decade ago the Feds coughed up just over 1 billion dollars that allowed Chalk River to continue to grow and thrive and this latest injection will carry on the work that was initiated then and continues to serve critical needs in nuclear science today.
Kompass says that a good chunk of the current funds will be directed specifically to the A.N.M.R.C Project which was born out of the previous major funding and continues to be a very important piece of the CNL puzzle today:
Kompass says the the A.N.M.R.C is the largest nuclear lab in the country which will be critical in keeping Canadian nuclear technologies among the most prolific in the world.
