This weekend Special Olympics Renfrew are hosting their Polar Plunge fundraiser.
It’s an event chairperson Kyle Duperron-Haynes said is great for Special Olympics promotion; the Plunge is simple fun for all ages.
The fundraising also allows Special Olympics Renfrew to replace sports equipment that is over 20 years old.
Due to a recent decline in Special Olympics interest, the success of these events are more vital than ever.
It’s not only athletes on the decline, but volunteer coaches as well.
Duperron-Haynes said most of the time volunteers from all walks of life are typically able to provide a helping hand.
However, the club needs volunteers with relevant experience to safely conduct programming.
He said they are open to interested high school students with a knack for sports who are looking for volunteer hours.
Fundraising from this weekend’s Plunge will also make it possible for Renfrew’s athletes to travel for provincial and national competitions, Duperron-Haynes said winter travel is particularly expensive and resource-intensive.
