Renfrew-native Alan Letang’s latest job is taking him back to his hockey roots.
Letang has been hired as the head coach for the Weiden Blue Devils, a Bavaria-based hockey team playing in Germany’s second-tier league, DEL2.
The 50-year-old spent the past five years as the head coach for the OHL’s Sarnia Sting, leading the team from 2021 to 2025 and helping them to their first-ever conference final appearance in 2023 before he was fired this past November after the Sting struggled to begin the season.
Letang is no stranger to Germany, making over 200 appearances in the DEL as a player. He has also spent time as an assistant coach for Canada’s U20 national team, winning gold medals at the U20 Junior World Championships in both 2019/20 and 2022/23.
The Blue Devils currently sit in 12th place out of 14 teams with just a handful of games left in the DEL2 regular season.
Speaking with local media, Team President Stephan Seeger confirmed the hiring, adding that Letang’s last words to him were that “the season is not over yet; I can’t wait to land and get started.”
