Environment Canada issued a Yellow Cold Warning for parts of eastern Ontario as a prolonged period of dangerous cold is expected tonight into Saturday morning.
Forecasters say wind chills near minus 35 are possible, and some communities could see similar conditions again Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Officials say extreme cold puts everyone at risk, especially young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers and people without proper shelter.
Residents are urged to watch for cold-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour changes in fingers and toes.
People should cover exposed skin, as frostbite can develop within minutes.
Officials also recommend checking on older family members, friends and neighbours.
If symptoms appear, people should move indoors and begin warming right away.
Outdoor workers are reminded to take regular breaks to warm up during the cold spell. Stay informed through local alerts and forecasts today.
