The water is inside the building | Mik Horvath/MBC
According to Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) custodial staff, at some time between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. yesterday (Feb. 5), water began to enter RCI’s tech wing.
The water flooded the intersection of Bonnechere St. S and Renfrew Ave. W, blanketing the immediate outside area in a sheet of ice.
Ontario Clean Water Agency crews were on scene, locating the source of the flooding.
The Town of Renfrew said on social media that a broken hydrant lead caused the flooding at the intersection and OCWA crews, OPP and RCI staff worked throughout the night to keep the intersection clear and repair the break.
OPP officer Mark Bennett was one of the officers on the scene.
The water made it into the wood shop, and custodial staff immediately started to remove as much water as they can.
The town said the intersection is now open, but public works crews remain in the area to lay salt and clean up the mess.
Town staff are telling commuters in the area to be careful as conditions could still be slippery.
