With winter well underway and the kind of snowfall we tend to see in the Valley, Enbridge has a timely warning for homeowners.
Snow buildup around exterior appliance vents can cause carbon monoxide gas to back up into homes, which can have deadly effects.
Chris Ridler, manager of utilization for Northern and Eastern Ontario with Enbridge Gas, says the potential for issues caused by snow buildup is really twofold in this case:
As of Jan. 1 of this year, provincial laws have changed, requiring carbon monoxide alarms on every floor of a dwelling, including sleeping areas. Ridler says Enbridge is working hard to get that messaging out to ensure not only compliance with current laws, but more importantly, the safety those laws help provide.
The updated requirements apply to all existing homes that have any of the following:
• A fuel-burning appliance (such as a furnace, water heater, or stove that uses natural gas, propane, oil, or wood)
• A fireplace
• An attached garage
• Air for heating that comes from a fuel-burning appliance not contained within the home (for example, an appliance in a utility shed)
Ridler says getting the alarms installed is one thing, but understanding how to properly and regularly maintain them is something some homeowners don’t fully understand.
Carbon monoxide alarms can cost anywhere from $50 to $100 and are readily available at most hardware stores. Residents are also reminded to keep snow cleared from vents and gas meters to remain safe throughout the winter and beyond.
