OPP East Region have been receiving an increase in reports of cars failing to stop for school buses.
The police put a notice about the calls on their Facebook on Oct. 30, however drivers in Eastern Ontario are still ignoring the flashing lights.
Police say they are still receiving these calls with some bus drivers even noting multiple incidents in a single day.
Failing to stop for a school bus that is unloading passengers is illegal with penalties of up to $2000 and six demerit points for a first offence.
Repeat offenders could expect larger fines and potential jail time.
OPP media relations said it happens virtually every day in multiple locations in Eastern Ontario.
Failing to stop for school buses with flashing lights is also extremely dangerous; it puts children at an unnecessary risk of injury or death.
“While we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere,” OPP East Region said on today’s notice.
