As a governing body the Town of Renfrew regularly works with local Indigenous communities, such as the Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation (BAFN) who’s territory resides within The Valley.
Ahead of reconciliation myFM reached out to the town office to hear how they’re honouring the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
“On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to reflect on the painful history and lasting impacts of residential schools, and we honour the strength and resilience of survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities,” the Town of Renfrew said in an official statement.
“The Town of Renfrew is committed to listening, learning, and walking the path of reconciliation together, with respect and humility,” they said.
There will also be an event at the myFM Centre, hosted by BAFN and supported by the Town of Renfrew, which will give passersby an opportunity to check out local Indigenous culture firsthand.
Town of Renfrew said it’s on from 9:30 a.m. until noon and is free to attend.
There will be traditional drumming and kids will get the chance to do some Indigenous Craft with Bonnechere Inòdewiziwin Abinòdjìnjish Kikinàmàgan (BIAK) EarlyON.
“We look forward to working with them [BAFN] more, and are always grateful for their wisdom and service to our community,” the town said.
BAFN Chief Richard Zohr said getting the youth involved in education surrounding Indigenous culture is critical.
He said the Cultural Community Centre is the perfect hub to corral curious minds.
