Daina Proctor assumed the Mayor's chair during Horton Township's September 9th council meeting.
An important political position remains in limbo in Horton, and the deadline to find the right fit is now on.
The township’s council chamber is short one member, as now-former Mayor David Bennett was recently removed from the role after spotty attendance in 2024 led to a vote of non-confidence back in May.
Chief Administrative Officer Hope Dillabough explains that the vote itself didn’t contribute to Bennett’s departure, but what happened afterwards certainly did.
Bennett had faced ongoing health issues through most of 2024 and had worked with township staff for a leave of absence over the final few months of the year. However, Dillabough says his absence after the vote forced the township’s hand in invoking the Municipal Act to remove him from his duties.
Daina Proctor and Tom Webster were appointed mayor and deputy mayor on September 9th, while the township welcomes residents to put their names in as soon as possible for the now vacant councillor position.
Dillabough is directing those interested to check the requirements and process before officially declaring for the role, adding that they are legally obligated to find a qualified candidate to fill the role until the current term wraps up next year.
