Wilfred Duncan’s farming journey has taken him a great distance before the family settled along the Queen’s Line in Whitewater Region.
Starting off in Manitoba, the Duncan family found their way to Tennessee, where they spent a decade as dairy farmers, before coming to the Ottawa Valley to grow horse hay for clients both locally and in the United States.
The climate has proved difficult to consistently grow that hay, but the farm has been slowly transitioning towards heartier crops like corn, soy, and wheat or the past 20 years, as well as taking the chance to try their hand at custom crop spraying with nearby M&R Feeds and Farm Supply.
Wilfred’s son, Bryson, sees himself more as the right-hand man on the farm. However, his 61-year-old father begs to differ, as his 24-year-old son begins to take on more responsibilities. While no official plans for succession are in place, the family says conversations are underway for a transition of power within the next five years.
