Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled a new 28-member cabinet aimed at resetting the Liberal government’s focus on trade with the United States, public safety and the cost of living.
The new cabinet, announced Tuesday, includes 10 first-time MPs and marks a significant shift from the Trudeau-era front bench. Several ministers from Carney’s short-lived pre-election cabinet have been dropped, and new roles have been introduced, including junior secretaries of state.
The shuffle is designed to refocus the government on economic stability, U.S. trade relations, and domestic affordability concerns. Restored portfolios include Women and Gender Equality and Official Languages, while Secretaries of State were named for Labour and Children and Youth.
However, disability advocates have raised concerns about the continued absence of a minister or secretary specifically responsible for accessibility.
