Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a disturbing string of vandalism in Arnprior and McNab-Braeside.
Officials from both municipalities have issued statements and citizens are denouncing the acts, which included the spray painting of racist symbols and language on public signs, that occurred Wednesday and Thursday.
Affected areas include Robert Simpson Park and Red Pine Bay.
“Town Council and Staff are deeply disturbed and saddened by the recent act of hate vandalism in our community. This kind of behavior has no place here — or anywhere,” reads a Town of Arnprior statement. “It is not only an attack on property but on the values of dignity, inclusion, and respect that we stand for.”
The statement goes on to say: “We stand in solidarity with those targeted and reaffirm our commitment to building a community rooted in compassion, safety, and justice. Hate has no home here. If you have any information or need support, please reach out by email to clerks@arnprior.ca or call 613-623-4231 ext 1817.”
McNab-Braeside Mayor Lori Hoddinott says township staff have already begun the process of removing and repairing affected signs.
“Let me be clear, racism and hate have no place in McNab-Braeside. We stand united against these despicable acts and will pursue all available legal avenues to ensure those responsible are held fully accountable,” she said.
Police from the Renfrew Detachment of the OPP issued a press release.
“The symbols are known hate-motivated images, but investigators cannot speculate on the motivation of the person or people responsible,” it reads. “Renfrew OPP will be conducting additional focused patrols in area to deter and intercept criminal activity.”
Renfrew OPP is asking for the public’s assistance. If you have any information or evidence regarding this crime, please contact the Renfrew OPP at 1-800-310-1122 or Pembroke/Renfrew County Crime Stoppers at 613-735-8477 or toll free at 1-800-222-8477.
