The Township of Laurentian Valley is joining communities across Canada in recognizing Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week from May 4 to 10. This national awareness campaign encourages everyone to be ready for emergencies and understand the risks they may face in their area.
This year’s theme focuses on the many seasonal hazards Ontarians face throughout the year, from spring floods to summer heatwaves. It aligns with the national theme, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks,” developed by Public Safety Canada, and supports Ontario’s Emergency Management Strategy and Action Plan. The goal is to keep individuals and communities informed, trained, and ready for potential emergencies.
EP Week is a partnership effort among local governments, provincial and territorial emergency teams, and Public Safety Canada. It serves as a reminder for residents to take steps now to protect themselves, their families, pets, and neighbours.
Residents of Laurentian Valley are encouraged to learn about the types of emergencies common in the area, such as ice storms, strong winds, heavy flooding, and extreme temperatures. By understanding these risks, individuals can take meaningful steps to stay safe.
Mayor Bennett urges the community to stay informed and involved. “Follow Township socials all week for tips and guidance on potential local hazards throughout the year and how you can be prepared for emergencies in all seasons,” said the Mayor. “If you are not internet savvy, you can also reach out to the Township for print versions of materials to help you be prepared.”
One of the most important steps residents can take is to create a 72-hour emergency plan and build an emergency kit. It takes just 10 to 15 minutes to make a plan, and many items for a basic kit can be found at home or purchased during regular errands.
To get started, visit ontario.ca/beprepared for helpful tools and resources. Residents can also explore the Emergency Management page on the Township of Laurentian Valley’s website for local updates and advice.
EP Week is a chance to build a safer, more prepared community. By taking a few simple steps, everyone can be ready to face emergencies at any time of the year.
