With Emergency Preparedness Week approaching, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is asking pet owners across the province to “Promise to Prepare” by creating an emergency plan that includes their pets.
From May 1 to 10, pet owners can visit ontariospca.ca/ep to make the Promise to Prepare. Those who sign up will be entered to win a pet first aid kit and will receive a free digital 72-hour Emergency Preparedness Workbook. The workbook helps families build a survival kit for their pets in case of an emergency.
Whether evacuating due to a wildfire or staying home during a storm, having a plan and supplies ready can help keep pets safe and comfortable.
The Ontario SPCA is also offering free emergency decals and wallet cards. The decals are placed on front doors to alert first responders that pets are inside the home, which can help save lives during emergencies. The wallet cards let emergency responders know that the cardholder has pets at home who may need care if the owner becomes sick or injured.
“Emergencies can happen without warning. Having a plan in place that includes your pets can make all the difference,” said Heather Jobe of the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre. “Taking a few simple steps today means you’ll be ready to act quickly and confidently to protect every member of your family when it matters most.”
Pet owners are encouraged to visit ontariospca.ca/ep to participate and can stop by their local Ontario SPCA animal centre to pick up a free decal or wallet card, while supplies last.
