The firefighting team in Haley Station is pulling from their summer weekends at the Fire Hall to honour the life of one of their own.
Lieutenant Nathan Jahn with the Haley Station Firefighter’s Association says the teams from across the Ottawa Valley are welcome to join them outside the Cobden Astrolabe Arena on May 10th for the Roy Church Memorial Cornhole Tournament, remembering the long-time former captain who passed away shortly after retirement last year.
Doubles teams can enjoy a full day of competition and fun, plus raffle prizes, snacks, drinks, and a special sharpshooters game that will challenge the crowd to hit a smaller cornhole board for a chance at a rolling jackpot.
Of course, there’s also something to sweeten the deal for the people taking part in the day’s main event.
While turning to cornhole, a team favourite, as a tribute to Church’s 40-year career was not his brainchild, Jahn says he’s happy to incorporate ideas from across the fire hall as part of his job to introduce the station to community members, many of whom might be meeting their emergency services team for the first time.
Registration is available right now at $50 per team, with proceeds from the day will help establish a bursary in Roy’s name for Renfrew County students who are graduating high school and attending Emergency Services-related post-secondary.
