The events of last week have had their implications at municipal council tables in eastern Renfrew County.
On Friday, McNab-Braeside moved quickly to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of its former Mayor, Mark MacKenzie.
Township Council convened in Special Session, and first heard representations from members of the public in attendance at the meeting as to their preferences
Elected reps then went round the table for a dialogue among peers, with Robert Campbell the sole voice wanting it to be by public ballot.
Then councillors adjourned to an in camera meeting to weigh the options.
When discussion resumed, Deputy Mayor Lori Hoddinott conveyed the decisions.
Prior to Tuesday’s scheduled Council meeting, a swearing-in ceremony will take place at 5PM as Hoddinott and Councillor Scott Brum accede to their new roles.
Township Council will now advertise for interested persons wishing to fill the vacant representative’s seat at the table.
In Arnprior, a leave of absence granted to Councillor Billy Denault has become a moot point, as the new MPP resigned his municipal seat this morning (Monday February 3rd).
With his election to the Ontario legislature, decisions must be made as to how to replace him on local council.
Options include holding a byelection, naming the person who finished sixth in the 2022 civic vote to replace him, or inviting applications from the public to fulfill the balance of the term.
Arnprior Chief Administrative Officer Robin Paquette indicates a Special Meeting of Town Council will discuss and choose the procedure to fill Denault’s vacant Council seat either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.
A decision must come within 60 days of the resignation.
