The County of Renfrew has had to break out the ballot box to decide who will lead them into the new year.
County council re-elected Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon as Renfrew County Warden at their inaugural session on December 10th, defeating Greater Madawaska Mayor Rob Weir by a vote of 11 to 6.
In a statement following the vote, Emon explained that he has put his name forward for the warden’s position with a sense of pride for the communities being created and maintained locally, committing to contributing to and improving quality of life for all.
He also pledged to continue strengthening relationships with the City of Pembroke and the many townships within the county boundaries, as well as the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, a connection Emon admits has struggled to recover following the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing opioid crisis.
Emon would go on to state that “we must take responsibility for our piece of the province, the country, and the planet,” balancing environmental, economic, and public wellbeing matters to ensure the county can adapt to challenges as it grows.
It’s Emon’s seventh appointment as Warden and his third in a row since the retirement of Debbie Robinson back in 2022.
