This year’s Move for Youth challenge is yet further proof of how amazing our communities are at rallying around causes and supporting people in need.
The goal this year, in conjunction with National Bank and Centraide Outaouais, was to have 1,000 participants take 100 million steps and raise more than $100,000 for programs that support kids in need across Eastern Ontario and the Outaouais region.
In the end 1,049 participants totaled more than 106 million steps, helping raise more than $121,000.
That was twice the participation rate of 2023.
Unfortunately, mental health challenges are also on the increase.
Just last year, Ottawa Public Health released data showing 44 per cent – nearly half – of students in the region reported fair or poor mental health; more than double the numbers from 2019.
There’s an escalating use of drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.
United Way East Ontario notes youth from low-income or rural communities don’t have the same access to after-school activities or summer programs that help them stay on track.
The awareness and funds raised through Move for Youth create opportunities for local kids, putting them on the path to success in school, and in life.
Trisha Islam, Director, All That Kids Can Be, United Way East Ontario observes, “We believe that every child and youth should have a safe space to grow up.”
