Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is inviting farmers and interested constituents to a town hall meeting this Thursday to discuss proposed federal methane emissions.
Special guest MP Lianne Rood, shadow minister for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Eastern, Central and Southern Ontario, will be at the meeting to discuss proposed changes to the Reducing Enteric Methane Emissions from Beef Cattle (REME) Protocol.
In December the federal government laid out an additional set of changes to reduce methane emissions from dairy and beef cattle. The proposed changes are meant to provide incentives for producers to implement methods to reduce methane emissions from farm operations.
Gallant’s office says the rules are not yet “carved in stone” so farmers have an opportunity to provide input before the regulations are finalized.
Offsets for grain and other livestock will be discussed, as well as the reduction in the interest-free loan in the Advanced Payment Program from $350K to $100K.
The meeting is set for Thursday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Cobden Agricultural Hall.
