An upcoming report could spell out the fate of the current public works garage in Renfrew.
As the town and the Ministry of Transportation look at realigning Whitton Road to connect with Innovation Drive as part of the Highway 417 expansion, the town is considering a parcel of land they own in that area for the future site of the garage and other municipal services.
The town bought property at 436 Lisgar Avenue as a potential site for a new Municipal Operations Centre back in 2020, but town staff have now been instructed to prepare a report on the feasibility of using the Whitton Road site instead.
Council did have some reservations about using the site near Renfrew’s Industrial Park, with Clint McWhirter curious if it could be put to better use in someone else’s hands.
Fellow Councillor Kyle Cybulski agreed that the report would be necessary to ensure they make the best possible decision with the land.
Renfrew’s Chief Administrative Officer, Rob Tremblay, says that any construction or development would still be several years out, no matter what choice is made.
The future site of the Municipal Operations Centre would also eventually house Renfrew’s new fire hall, animal control, and by-law enforcement offices.
