He’s been collecting Coca Cola memorabilia for over 50 years, and now retired Presbyterian Minister Leo Hughes is parting with his collection- but for a good cause.
You’ll often find the Reverend these days at the former Videoflicks location at the Arnprior Mall, watching satisfied shoppers peruse the collection’s inventory for the piece of their choice, and purchase it in exchange for a donation to the planned CT scanner for Arnprior Regional Health; that’s where we caught up with him- and he tells us about how it all began.
Those initial Coca Cola cars and delivery trucks are still the Reverend’s favourite pieces. Over the years, the collection has grown to include the massive inventory it contains today- but Hughes has had a little help along the way, from both expected sources.
And random gestures
Reverend Hughes says much like coin books that list the collector value of yesterday’s money, Coca Cola publishes an annual catalogue of its memorabilia-
and that’s been used as source guide for pricing of the items you’ll see on display.
He tells us how he and his spouse came up with the plan to donate proceeds from its sale.
The goal of the initiative is to raise 10 thousand dollars, and after the first week 35 percent of that has been achieved.
The Reverend reinforces the message- the CT Scanner is definitely needed.
Visit the former Videoficks location- talk with a member of the Arnprior Lions Club or a Rotarian staffer-
and say hi to the 93 year old retired Presbyterian Minister yourself- he’s got plenty of stories, a a deep well of good will.
Oldies will continue our conversation with Reverend Hughes next week on Community Spotlight.
