Home owners and business in Cobden are in a state of shock when it comes to their water bills. Currently, Cobden residents pay some of the highest water and wastewater bills in the Ottawa Valley, mostly due to massive renovations to their wastewater treatment plant. Mayor for the Township of Whitewater Region Neil Nicholson tells myFM news that they simply don’t have enough users to help cover costs.
The list of signatures on a petition to lower water and wastewater rates in Cobden is growing. Some water rates are projected to rise to $4,000 annually by 2029. Nicholson says its a harsh reality of living in non urban centres.
The Mayor says the township will continue to try and find solutions and work with AMO to advocate to other levels of government for grants.
