Renfrew Pride is calling it a clear message standing up to intolerance.
Jeff Scott with the Renfrew Police Services Board and local OPP Constable Tina Hunt presented Renfrew Pride with a $2,000 cheque for a long-awaited rainbow sidewalk in downtown Renfrew.
Founder Chris Kyte says it comes at a critical time for the queer population in and around Renfrew, as “a lack of education and unfortunate misinformation” is putting local LGBTQ2S+ individuals at risk.
She adds that when organizations like the OPP and Police Services Board “take a public stand against hate, they send a clear message that intolerance is not welcome in our communities.”
The previous Town Council approved a plan to decorate a section of Railroad Avenue’s sidewalk near the Renfrew Public Library in Pride colours last year, but the project was not completed before the municipal elections in the fall.
As such, Kyte says Renfrew Pride will return to Town Hall on May 9th to ask for the new council’s blessing.
