It nearly got away from them at the end, but the Renfrew Wolves beat the Hawkesbury Hawks 3-2 in overtime on Friday night to take their first round playoff series 4 games to 1.
Renfrew would be making their second two-hour trip to the Robert Hartley Sports Complex in as many days but didn’t show signs of fatigue early on in the contest, controlling the pace of play and leading after the first period thanks to Noah Vom Scheidt.
After a quiet second frame, Joey Kennelly would score on the power play to put Renfrew up by two early in the third and seemingly ready to glide to the finish line.
The Hawks decided that would not be the case, pulling back into the game with a Garrison Schultz power play marker with seven minutes left and then using the extra attacker to find the equalizer with under a minute left in regulation from Alex Fournier.
The Wolves and Hawks would trade chances during 18 minutes and change of sudden death overtime before Noah Vom Scheidt scored his second of the contest, winning the game and series for the Renfrew Wolves.
Renfrew joins Smiths Falls as teams already advanced into the second round of the Bogart Cup playoffs.
