It’s the perfect ending for Renfrew’s Under 15 House hockey teams.
Assistant Coach Mike Merpaw joined his Renfrew Timberwolves 1 on the ice to celebrate after a 2-0 win in Fort Coulonge Wednesday night secured their grasp on the Upper Ottawa Valley House League’s A-Playoff Championship plaque.
It’s the second championship in Under 15 that a Renfrew team won this week, as the Timberwolves 2 swept past Petawawa for the House B-Playoff title on Monday.
It’s uncommon to see one town take both titles, but Merpaw explains that both Renfrew squads got a chance to share playoff glory thanks to how they finished in the regular season standings.
The First-to-Four-Points series between Renfrew and the Fort Coulonge Comets would be deadlocked after the first two games ended in a tie, but Merpaw says they made the most of the winner-take-all Game 3 in what ended up being quite the physical showdown.
The victory puts a wrap on a year that also saw tournament wins in Renfrew, Pembroke, and Cobden.
Merpaw says his team will celebrate with one last get-together next week before going their separate ways for the summer.
