Vermiculite Asbestos leakage has been identified as occurring at Renfrew Collegiate Institute, and the school has sent a letter home to families.
Asbestos use was typical in buildings constructed before the late 1980s and generally does not pose a problem if left undisturbed.
With deterioration asbestos can release fibres that if inhaled cause cause health issues.
This is believed to be the case where a staff member first noticed an issue in the school’s multi-sensory room.
Tests have since confirmed the presence of Vermiculite Asbestos, and the investigative firm, CM3 Environmental Inc. has subsequently discovered like situations elsewhere on the RCI premises.
Further testing is slated to occur and families will be updated.
RCI believes that the RCDSB and school administration will continue to meet or exceed all provincial requirements with regards to controlling any asbestos exposure and take the necessary steps to ensure
students and employees safety.
Principal Bill Smith’s letter concludes, “Students and staff should continue coming to school as usual knowing that the situation is in hand.”
