With the Zamboni door propped up and out of the way, there was nothing standing in the way of Wednesday’s crowd of 505 from seeing the Renfrew Wolves fend off the Brockville Braves in a 4-3 shootout victory.
The two sides had attempted to play this game the previous week before the door that allows the Ma-te-Way Activity Centre’s ice resurfacer into the rink got stuck in the first intermission. Per the CCHL rulebook, they started the game over from the top of the first period but with Renfrew’s 1-0 lead from the previous game intact.
Brock Mierzejewski and Trent Scullion added onto Joey Kennelly’s goal from last week for the Wolves. However, Brockville would end up leveling the game late into the third thanks to efforts from Aiden Carolan, Nathaniel Burelle, and Trent Ledrew.
The two teams would take their deadlock past overtime and into the shootout, where Mierzejewski and Elvis Slack would seal the deal for Renfrew.
Aaron Matthews, Renfrew’s back-up goaltender, picked up the win for his 28 save effort on 31 shots. Sami Molu turned away 35 of 38 attempts for Brockville.
The extra game will mean short rest for Renfrew this week. They host Carleton Place at the Ma-te-Way Centre on Friday, February 24th in a match-up of two teams vying for home-field advantage in the upcoming playoffs.
Game time on Friday is 7:30.
