Tonight’s Opening Ceremonies for the the Ontario Winter Games have been cancelled.
Games Chair and Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon says he and his team made the call early Thursday morning as it became more obvious that freezing rain would cause problems for families leaving Ma-te-Way Park in Renfrew around 8:30pm this evening.
However, Emon adds that he doesn’t expect the bad weather to have much impact on events happening on Friday or over the weekend.
Emon says he and his team did discuss the possibility of making up for the cancellation with a Closing Ceremonies on Sunday, February 12th, but the idea was eventually passed on due to conflicts with the event schedule.
While the Games Committee is confident the freezing rain will not affect the Games going forward, Emon says Renfrew County’s road crews are prepared to keep transit between event sites running smoothly and they’ve spoken with the governing sport bodies on their options should delays occur.
