By now, most of us have heard about the Grandparent Scam- except those of course who haven’t, and fall prey to it.
It’s a high-pressure heart-string tugger, and who doesn’t want to help a grandchild in trouble?
Fraudsters are counting on those factors when they phone.
There’s an actor who poses as your distraught family member, and his or her stress affects the sound of their voice, adding to the perceived credibility.
The money you send, (or hold for someone to come round and pick up), is allegedly for them to make bail in regard to the offence of which they are accused.
Don’t tell anyone and this will remain a secret between you and the court, ok?
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), in 2022, more than $9.2 million was reported lost to emergency scams across the county.
This was a drastic increase from $2.4 million in 2021.
