Next year will be an important crossroads for by-law enforcement in Renfrew.
At their meeting on Tuesday, December 20th, Town Council approved a one year extension on the towns agreement with Municipal Law Enforcement Services to handle issues like parking, animal control, property standards and noise complaints.
Acting Director of Strategic Services Kim Bulmer says MLES currently offer by-law services for eleven municipal clients.
Deals with longer terms were considered, but Bulmer says a one year deal will give the recently elected council time to see if they want to go continue with the relationship past 2023.
Bulmer did note that by-law enforcement can sometimes be a polarizing subject, but it has been successful in Renfrew.
The new deal kicks in on January 1st and extends to the end of the new year, as council is now on the clock to make a decision regarding a longer deal with MLES.
Some alternatives to a long term deal that Bulmer has offered include Renfrew hiring it’s own by-law staff, or to look for another By-Law enforcement provider.
