Renfrew gets a new look for Mayor and Council after Monday evening’s municipal election.
Mayor-elect Tom Sidney won a close race for the spot and says the vote for him is a mandate for more transparency from the town to its residents.
The race came down to a matter of twelve votes, as Sidney and other candidates for mayor and councilor were kept in suspense as the vote totals slowly made their way onto the screen at the Ma-te-Way Activity Centre last night.
On top of making town decisions more open, developing secondary industry, and attracting new residents are on the top of Sidney’s mind for the new term.
Sidney will be flanked by a new council team as well. Jason Legris, Kyle Cybulski, John McDonald, Andrew Dick, and Clint McWhirter will help lead the town for the next four years.
It’s a group that will have to hit the ground running with just one member having past experience in Clint McWhirter
Outside of him, the other councilors elected on Monday will see their first term in public office, although Sidney tells myFM that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
According to Renfrew’s unofficial results: Tom Sidney won the mayor’s seat in Renfrew with 873 votes, only 12 more than runner-up Sandi Heins’ 861. Mike Coulas finished third with 691. Kate Windle and Callum Scott also picked up votes on the night, at 168 and 153 respectively.
