It’s a scam that has taken people across the province for over $118 million dollars this year.
The OPP are warning about the “Grandparent” or “Emergency” scam.
The scammer will call the often-elderly victim claiming to be their grandchild, the family member’s lawyer, or a police officer calling about an accident or criminal charge.
They tell the victim that they need immediate cash by mail or courier for supposed bail, legal fees, or fines, and in some cases the fraudster will get the victim’s address in order to show up at their door posing as the courier.
Police say if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
If someone reaches out to you like this, end that call and either contact the family member in question or the police detachment directly to confirm the situation.
If you’ve been the victim of this or any other scam, contact local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
