Clint McWhirter is looking get back on town council in Renfrew.
McWhirter is currently a Parts and Services manager with Renfrew Chrysler and former two-term member of Renfrew’s Town Council.
He tells myFM that a big challenge for council going forward is handling increased costs for road and building projects due to COVID-related material and labour shortages.
McWhirter believes it’s the town responsibility to get creative in finding the funds to get Renfrew ready for an expected period of growth over the next four years.
McWhirter adds that his seven years previously on council is something that none of the other candidates in the running have, and he has experience doing the legwork to get tasks done for the town.
That extends to Renfrew’s housing situation, which is another issue that McWhirter is paying special attention to.
While more housing in general will help cool off the currently red-hot real estate market and lower prices, McWhirter says the town will need to work closely with developers and both the provincial and federal governments to get affordable housing projects on the go
While McWhirter says the talk about business and growth is good news, the town still opportunities to grow in other ways. That includes take a cue from some of Renfrew’s neighours and developing along the Bonnechere River to increase tourism.
One of eight candidates running for council in this election, McWhirter would also like to see Renfrew take advantage of it’s claim as the birthplace of the NHL, and better promote the town’s hockey museum located at the Ma-Te-Way Centre.
The municipal election takes place on October 24th.
