Bonnie Haskins shows off the new Gretzky memorabilia
Renfrew’s NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum has a new permanent piece on display.
Operations Director Bonnie Hastings tells myFM about a great poster signed by the Great One.
The signed 1984 Canada Cup Poster features portraits of Wayne Gretzky and the rest of a star-studded Team Canada and comes courtesy of Cathy Gretzky, a first cousin of Wayne.
Hastings says a the poster had a short trip from nearby Quadeville, where it was a part of memorabilia collection created by Cathy’s brother, Ted.
The poster now sits alongside other Gretzky and Canada Cup related items on loan from local patrons.
Hastings believes that the newly furnished corner of the Ma-Te-Way Centre exhibit provides an important link between the league’s founding in Renfrew and the modern game.
The National Hockey Association was started by Renfrew’s M.J. and Ambrose O’Brien in 1909 and would eventually become what is now the National Hockey League.
The museum is open Thursdays 1pm to 4pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
