Town Council used their Tuesday, September 13th meeting to take the next step in a major watermain project for next year.
They approved a deal worth around $630,000 with Jp2g Consultants for engineering and project management for the project on Argyle and Lochiel streets, as well as Hall Avenue and Opeongo road ahead of it’s Spring 2023 start.
Director of Development and Works Mike Asselin says a joint federal and provincial grant will cover $5 million for the watermain replacement, with the town budgeting to stay flexible elsewhere.
Director Asselin, speaking to council at the meeting, explained that not everything in the scope of the project was covered by the grant. Items like improvements to sections of road not dug up to reach the watermain, as well fixing crosswalks will need to be paid for by the town.
With that in mind, Asselin notes that the town has budgeted over $2 million extra for work not covered by the grant.
Construction along Argyle street, Lochiel Street, and portions of Hall Avenue and Opeongo Road is expected to start around May of next year and continue into early 2025.
