There’s still work to do in Renfrew County after Pride Month ends.
That’s according to Jill Holroyd of PFlag Renfrew County who tells myFM that while visibility and support for Pride efforts has been ample, there has been recent backlash to the LGBTQ2S+ community and their events.
Holroyd says that disinformation about certain pride events, like Drag Queen Story Time, has been a major cause for the pushback in recent months.
In spite of that Holroyd says PFlag, which helps members and allies of the local LGBTQ2S+ community with support, education, and outreach campaigns, expects to be busy well past June helping the community remain visible.
Holroyd says homelessness and self-harm are recurring issues in the LGBTQ2S+ community, often made worse when they don’t feel safe where they live. However, stories of success and thriving within the community give hope, making spaces where people can be safely be visible and comfortable vital.
