Town Council was split over what to do with the Post Office Building on Raglan Street South at this Tuesday’s meeting.
The building was sold a few years back to a party who had originally planned to turn part of it into a boutique hotel but, as Reeve Peter Emon tells myFM, a number of issues in and out of the building stalled the effort.
After a healthy debate, councilors voted narrowly in favour of releasing the owner of the building from the original plan, giving him an extra month to either get suppliers in order for the project, or look to other solutions.
Emon says this will give the owner more time to refocus on getting work on the site done.
Emon adds that he felt council understood for the most part that buying back the building was not in the cards.
The Tuesday vote comes after a long and open dialogue between Council and the owner regarding the numerous issues getting suppliers and workers in to refurbish the building.
Emon says the owner still has plans and work is expected to get underway in some capacity soon.
