Local beekeeper Andre Pilon is not alone in the loss of the vast majority of honey bees in his colony.
Over the winter the Arnprior beekeeper lost 62 of 70 colonies, nearing ninety percent of his inventory.
Pilon says an historic understanding has fallen victim to scientific ingenuity.
For much of the background to our story, Pilon referred us to Tibor Szabo, former head of the Ontario Beekeepers Association, who believes the chemicals in the GM plants are poison to bees- as the insect doesn’t have the same blood-brain barrier as humans.
Szabo maintains the problem of bee kills worsens near agricultural lands, and flowing waterways.
He now operates a bee queen resupply business targeting owners with single hives.
Local beekeeper Andre Pilon likens bees to the proverbial canary in the coal mine.
As humans can’t determine where bees seek to feed, the problem- which also affects butterflies, beetles, ants, spiders and flies will only worsen.
