After four high-scoring, heavily physical affairs between the Renfrew Wolves and Kemptville 73’s over the past week, game five of the First Round CCHL playoff series between the two sides was relatively subdued.
Renfrew came in one win away from moving on the second round, while Kemptville were still fighting for their playoff lives as the puck dropped at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. It would be Kemptville who drew first blood, as Matthew O’Doherty gave the 73’s a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period.
That’s where the score stood until the back end of the second period, when Renfrew’s Noah Vom Scheidt brought the game back to level with his second goal of the playoffs.
From there, a war of attrition broke out on the MAC’s ice, as neither side were able to break through despite a barrage of shots during the third period from the home side. A winner wouldn’t be decided until double overtime, where Alexander Caulfield laced a feed from Hunter Brazier past Wolves goalie Will Craig to force the series to continue.
Craig stopped 38 shots on 40 attempts, earning third star honours. 73’s netminder Tyler Laureault made 55 saves on 56 shots on his way to second star of the game.
Game six takes place at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Thursday. 96.1 myFM will have the game for you, with the opening puck drop at 7:30.
