The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council and Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg say the actions taking place on traditional unceded territory in Ottawa is unacceptable.
A joint statement released Wednesday afternoon (February 2nd, 2022), says the Algonquin Nation does not support the set up of a teepee, the pipe ceremony and sacred fire in Confederation Park in support of the “freedom convoy”.
The Algonquin Nation says they did not give consent for these ceremonial practices, adding they could cause more harm to First Nation/Algonquin People.
Residents are reminded that permission is needed to proceed with ceremonial practices.
The joint statement goes on to read the Algonquin Nation does not support the “freedom convoy” or any other movement that compromises the safety of community members.
Organizers of the “freedom convoy” are planning to hold a news conference this afternoon to address various issues surrounding the protest.
