The Town of Renfrew is moving forward with plans to replace lighting along the Millennium Trail.
On Tuesday night (January 11th, 2022), council agreed to purchase the lights from Lighting FX and have local company Dougherty Electric complete the install.
It will cost the town roughly $32,000 to complete the work, about $8,000 under budget.
Other quotes for the project were received with the most expensive upwards of $46,000.
Reeve Peter Emon commented that some of the light poles along the trail are off centre.
Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for the Town of Renfrew, Kevin Hill, says they do straighten the posts with a machine and sand-dust every spring.
Mayor Don Eady asked about energy savings from switching over the LED lighting.
Hill says they haven’t seen the drop in costs they were hoping with the LED conversion project at the arena about 5-years ago, but notes usage is up and rates have slightly increased.
He adds the total cost to keep the lights on along the Millennium Trail is fairly consistent on an annual basis ranging from $7,500 to $7,900.
Hill says it will be interesting to see what cost savings are realized from switching to LED lighting.
The current Millennium Trail Lighting was installed 22-years ago back in the year 2000.
The 76 current lights will be replaced with 80 watt LED bulbs with a 10-year warranty.
The new lights will be shipped immediately and installed over the next few weeks.
