The rapid spread of COVID-19 is causing shortages of healthcare workers across Renfrew County and District.
Acting Medical of Health with the Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU), Doctor Robert Cushman, says many healthcare workers are having to isolate due to testing positive for COVID-19.
Cushman says even if we have enough capacity in hospitals, the shortage of healthcare workers across the industry is a huge issue.
The Acting Medical Officer of Health in Renfrew County and District says the shortage in the healthcare system goes back pre-pandemic and adds not many staff at hospitals and long-term care homes were let go due to vaccine guidelines.
Back in October (2021), the Pembroke Regional Hospital announced over 97% of staff and physicians were vaccinated against COVID-19. Updated information from the Renfrew County and District Health Unit last week showed outbreaks were being monitored in eight high risk settings across the region.
