Contractors have started pouring concrete for the Ma-te-Way expansion project in Renfrew.
Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for the Town of Renfrew Kevin Hill says the goal is to get ready for steel to go up early in March.
While COVID-19 has forced local hockey teams to put their season on pause temporarily, Hill says renovations at Ma-te-Way will have no impact on operations at the arena.
He expects all refrigeration work will be completed after the ice season comes to a close.
Hill says the completion date of the project has been pushed back a month or two with work expected to be complete by December of 2022.
The Ma-te-Way expansion project is a 76,500 square foot facility to be built next to the current arena.
The expansion includes an Indigenous Cultural Centre, an NHL sized ice surface, an elevated walking track, fitness centre, regulation sized gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, Parks, Recreation and Facilities administrative offices and lease space.
