The County of Renfrew is working to complete a section of the Algonquin Trail through Pembroke and Laurentian Valley.
Both municipalities recently agreed to allow motorized traffic on local sections of the trail.
Manager of Forestry and GIS Jason Davis says it’s a two year project and they’re currently working on a section between Turcotte Road and Old Mill Road.
The contractor also plans to address bridges in Pembroke ahead of the upcoming snowmobile season and will work to create a parking area for trail users located at McKay Street.
Davis says looking ahead to 2022 they plan to continue work on the Algonquin Trail up through Garrison Petawawa towards Chalk River.
Once finished, a 37-kilometre section of the Algonquin Trail/Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail will be complete from Petawawa to Smiths Falls.
When these sections of the trail officially open following the completion of the contracted improvements, County of Renfrew staff will be addressing dust mitigation and enforcement issues.
The County wants to remind all users of the Algonquin Trail to obey and respect all posted signage and rules.
