Must have been quite the dubious distinction: a 26 year old driver from Scarborough found to be travelling at 162 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone Sunday has become the first driver in the district to face newly-minted Stunt Racing penalties under the Highway Traffic Act.
A new law, the Moving Ontarians More Safely (MOMS) Act, 2021 was passed back in June, and key elements of the legislation intended to combat street racing came into effect this past Sunday.
The length of the roadside driver’s licence suspension for street racing increased from seven days to the now-current 30 days.
The section was also expanded to apply to certain off-road locations such as parking lots, bike paths and trails.
At about 12:50PM Sunday, just over 12 hours after the new provisions took effect, Killaloe OPP conducted a traffic stop on a passenger car on Highway 41 in the Township of Bonnechere Valley.
The 26 year old driver from Scarborough was found to be travelling at 162 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone- resulting in loss of licence for 30 days, and vehicle impoundment for fourteen.
